#yam The Node Ahead: JavaScript leaps from browser into future • The Register

Voxer is a walkie-talkie for the modern age, an iPhone app that lets you instantly talk across the interwebs and listen at the same time and leave voice messages if no one is on the other end and simultaneously chat with multiple people and toggle between text and voice to your heart's content. It's a real-time internet app in the extreme, and that's why it's built with a development platform most of the world has never heard of.

The Student Portfolio is the New Book: New Practices, Profession, and Scholarship -- Campus Technology #yam

It is no stretch to say, "The knowledge of an academic course no longer pre-exists the course." This is literally true, since over 15 weeks--or 10--the knowledge domain in which the course is offered will in fact have moved its conceptual conversation significantly enough to challenge the instructor's "truths" from the beginning of the course. Knowledge in any field is a moving target now.

This is certainly the case for my IT subjects which is why I never settle on lecture content concretely until a few days beforehand.

walkthe.net - explore, reflect, act #yam

A couple of step on from web slides...

Welcome to the home of web walks!

The web is a rich but overwhelming place. Luckily, there are nice people who created guided web walks on many topics. They will hop you from site to site, together with some guiding text and reflection questions. Select a walk and explore, reflect and act your way to understanding, step by step.

Chrome Web Store and Web Apps

Nelson Minar points out that there are two kinds of web apps in the Chrome store: hosted app and packaged apps. Hosted apps are normal websites that can be loaded using any web browser. Packaged apps only live inside Chrome: they work offline and they use the extensions API to integrate with the browser. You can easily tell a packaged app from a hosted app by looking at the address bar - if there's no URL, it's a packaged app.

The US federal government will soon adopt a "cloud-first" policy, meaning federal agencies will be required to used cloud services "whenever a secure, reliable, cost-effective cloud option exists." The announcement came last week from Jeffrey Zients, the government's first chief performance officer. According to the Washington Post, the new policy is part of a broader government initiative to "fix IT."

Learning JavaScript Visually with Diagrams #webappdev

JavaScript diagram by Tim Caswell "One of the secrets to being a super effective JavaScript developer is to truly understand the semantics of the language," writes developer Tim Caswell. That's why he's created a series of JavaScript lessons based on diagrams, each one illustrating a piece of example code. Caswell's lessons aren't geared towards new programmers. Those with no experience would be better served looking towards an introductory book on programming (or at least this tutorial) to learn the terminology and basic concepts.

Why Software is More Important Than Sensors in the Internet of Things #yam

As the Internet of Things slowly becomes a commercial reality, led by industries such as food and logistics, the underlying technologies (RFID, sensors, QR codes and more) become less important than what is done with the data. As Bo Begole, Principal Scientist and Manager of Ubiquitous Computing at PARC, put it to me recently: "the algorithms are more interesting now than the sensors."
